What we'd like to talk about
We are the only US organization that supports professionals who work on rivers, seekingstrategic advice positioning of our professional association as aligned but different from grassroots advocacy.
Additional context
The challenge is that our members are both government agency people and river advocacy professionals and volunteers. Framing our messaging is critical to explain who we are and attract professionals who will pitch in as volunteers, too.
"Phone calls" are 1 hour, one-time calls with an organization. Learn the difference between volunteering on a Phone call and a Project here.
Our mission
"Supporting professionals who study, protect and manage North America's rivers."
The River Management Society (RMS) is the nation's premier network connecting those who work on and for rivers with their river professional peers, including outfitters and guides, rangers, planners and landscape architects, fluvial geomorphologists, environmental lawyers and policymakers, students, professors, researchers and authors.
What we do
RMS offers training workshops and series of 'conversations' on topics ranging from managing wild and scenic rivers and their specific river values (scenery, recreation, culture, fish and wildlife) to addressing the overwhelming need to welcome and embrace the cultural and ethnic diversity of the public who visit rivers and rely on them for sustenance. We host the National Rivers Project, an ever-growing geospatial map which allows visitors to 'shop' over 2000 for river trips on wild and scenic rivers, water trails and whitewater rivers. RMS and its members offer year-round mentorship, avenues to pursue river internships and permanent job opportunities to students who love rivers and being outside,. We are extremely proud of our multi-disciplinary River Studies and Leadership Certificate through ten universities and colleges in the U.S.
Testimonials
Insightful and experienced with small non-profits, Zak gave my organization a true gift during our call. He prefaced the session by asking for information that allowed him to develop a sense for our group and the issues we seek to tackle. During the call he identified and sought input to corroborate his observations. He then suggested specific changes to help us pursue our mission more effectively, and a number of processes and tools to actually get them done. He asked questions and listened to my responses, and stirred discussion that resulted in an outstanding strategic membership initiative that we can employ as an 'excuse to get our act together on the basics we've neglected: clarifying our value proposition; communicating well and with appropriate frequency; and driving people back to our website to continue engagement and sell membership, volunteerism and leadership. Net: his input today will surely make a difference.
