Project details

What we need
  • Initial assessment of areas of strength, targets for improvement and specific areas of focus desired for the coaching sessions
  • Up to 6 coaching sessions exploring areas such as motivation, empowerment, collaboration, communication, giving / receiving feedback & conflict management
  • Wrap-up session with actionable steps and advice moving forward as a manager
Additional details

Our organization has a new Executive Director. We have a six person team, with 1 FT Monday-Friday, 2 PT most days Monday-Friday, and 2 weekend positions - in addition to one intern. Seeking support in best management practices, how to adapt management practices for each staff member, and creating systems of accountability.

What we have in place
  • We currently have a monthly check-in with new employees and annual reviews, which should make it easy for you to get started. We also have position descriptions with responsibilities and expectations, and the ability to provide any other information you need.
How this will help
This project will save us $2,368 , allowing us to continue investing in good green jobs for young people who haul food waste by bike and transform it into high-quality compost that nourishes and restores local soils.

BK ROT provides employment opportunities for young people and invests in the environmental justice leaders of tomorrow. For our mission to succeed, it is essential for us to provide a supportive, structured and accountable work environment for young people, many of whom do not have prior work experience. This project will ensure our new leadership team is supported and can develop practices that create a healthy work environment for team members to thrive.

Our mission

BK ROT is NYC's first community supported bike powered organic waste hauling and composting service. Our project is staffed by local youth and young adults who haul organic waste from small businesses and transform it into high quality compost. Our operations provide accessible, educational jobs for emerging environmental leaders while creating more opportunities for our community to address climate change. We work at the intersection of environmental and social injustices impacting our health and ecosystem. Centering on Black, Brown, Undocumented, Migrant, Women, and LGTBQGNC young adults, we support the next generation of environmental justice leaders who will shape our city.

What we do

We collect and locally process 10,000- 12,000 lbs of organic waste monthly, year-round. We provide handmade compost to community groups, neighbors, gardeners and urban farmers to amend soil and grow food. We offer accessible healthy environmental jobs to those most impacted by the harmful legacy of the waste industry. We illustrate a local grassroots environmental justice solution to organic waste while building community resiliency.

Testimonials

Deborah was a pleasure to work with and a wonderful active listener! She cultivated an open and supportive environment for me to share my management challenges and experiences. She provided reflective questions and spaciousness that guided me in developing the skills and solutions that support my management ability. Was very grateful for this Catchafire Project and the opportunity to work with Deborah.
