Project details

What we need
  • Summary of best channel(s) for Organization's needs and recommendations for implementation and prioritization
  • A detailed plan for one channel that summarizes best practices, ideas for possible content, and tips on how to measure success
  • Note: This project does not include content creation or account set up
Additional details

Our community radio station is good at reaching its most obvious audiences - passionate music fans who are actively participating in the music scene. But we know there's a larger audience out there who would be interested in our work, but who we're struggling to reach. We must continue to grow our audience in order to flourish, but we need to figure out how to reach folks who are interested in independent music, but aren't actively engaging in it by attending events.

What we have in place
  • We currently have active social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instragram), which should make it easy for you to get started. We also have strong visual branding that people tend to recognize, and the ability to provide any other information you need.
How this will help
This project will save us $1,500 , allowing us to cover a month of rent on our studios.

CHIRP is celebrating its 10th birthday this year, so we're not the "new kid in town" any longer, and the earned media that brought us a lot of attention in our early days has largely disappeared. As a grassroots organization, our budget is limited, but growing our audience - which leads to eventual growth in funding through individual donations - is essential to our fiscal well-being as we move forward. We know there are people who would be interested in tuning in if only we could reach them.

Our mission

The Chicago Independent Radio Project (CHIRP) is a volunteer driven, listener-supported radio station built and run by independent-minded music and arts fans. CHIRP is always live and local, connecting Chicago's diverse creative communities through its programming and events.

What we do

CHIRP is a volunteer-driven community radio station broadcasting at 107.1FM on the North Side of Chicago and worldwide at chirpradio.org. Our hosts are live and local every day of the year, curating their own shows, interacting with listeners, and sharing their musical knowledge and passions.

We also curate a number of in-person events each year, including two Record Fairs, a monthly live music showcase, CHIRP Night at the Whistler, and a quarterly live lit and music series, The First Time.

CHIRP has one professional staff member and more than 250 volunteers. We welcome new volunteers at orientations three times per year, and train them in an array of skills, from on-air DJ work to features interviewing to audio production. Volunteers lead thirteen station departments, including music, marketing, partnerships, technology, outreach, digital strategy, events, and more.
